World Heritage Site's Sacred Places in Spotlight

To mark the day and celebrate the inscription of Liverpool - Maritime Mercantile City a number of events will be staged.

A new interactive DVD - "UNcover Albert Dock and the Pier Head" will be premiered. It has been produced by Jen Heyes of Cut To The Chase Productions following community workshops and is aimed mainly at young people and families. It will be launched on World Heritage Day at an event at Our Lady and St Nicholas Church. It was jointly commissioned by the Liverpool World Heritage Site, the Liverpool Culture Company and English Heritage.

Tours of the site, starting at The Cenotaph on St George's Plateau and led by Blue Badge guides, have been organised. They will take in outstanding historic buildings including religious buildings and sacred places around the site including Our Lady and St Nicholas Church and the Scandinavian Seamen's Church, They will also look at the historic commercial district, Stanley Dock, Albert Dock and Ropewalks.

There has been incredible interest in the tours which are already fully booked.

John Hinchliffe, World Heritage Officer said: "This day gives us an opportunity to showcase out World Heritage site and give people, a greater understanding of some of our historic buildings and areas. While the theme for this year is Religious Heritage and Sacred Places - and the site has many fascinating places of worship - we will also be looking at other aspects of the site.

"I am astounded at the public interest in the toursand I am sure the new DVD will stimulate the interest of young people and families in the historic environment. I am very optimistic that it will encourage more people to visit the Albert Dock and the Pier Head, to look more closely at their architectural details and to appreciate the historical significance of the World Heritage Site."

Members of the public are invited to view the DVD at and take away a copy between 12.30 and 3pm.
