David Cornett and SNOW Architects

David Cornett

What is your business?
I’m one of three directors of SNOW architects, a local RIBA Chartered Architectural practice. We are the architects for “Lever Court”, a £8.5m, mixed use project, for Iliad Developments in Duke Street. We are also involved in the refurbishment of Church House, a Grade II Listed building, on the corner of Paradise Street and Hanover Street. Other live projects include extensions to client’s homes, restaurants, hotels, industrial units, student accommodation and mixed use city centre residential schemes.

Why did you start it?
SNOW architects was formed in 2003. We recognised there was a niche for an architectural practice, in Liverpool, which would offer a more personal approach whilst maintaining a professional and efficient service.

What did you do before it?
I excelled at art and technical drawing and a career in architecture seemed the natural choice. On leaving school, I started working in an architect’s office to gain practical experience whilst studying construction at Hugh Baird College and later Liverpool John Moores University. I have over twenty years experience as an architectural technician, having worked for several well known architectural practices in Liverpool, Manchester and London. I have continued to develop my skills and throughout my career, applying them on the various projects I have
been involved with.

What makes your business unique?
We provide a personal, efficient service on projects from small residential properties to larger commercial developments. You can be confident of a considered approach to meet your ambitions, deadlines and budget. We believe our designs at feasibility stage should not differ greatly from the scheme finally delivered on site. Our commitment to design and functionality is carried throughout the process from concept to the final constructed building.

This year, in order to support the charity Shelter, SNOW are offering 08 businessconnect members the chance to get some expert advice on creating their dream home, while raising funds to help homeless people. 08 businessconnect homeowners can receive an hour-long consultation offering professional advice on anything from plans for a new build home, to extensions and eco-design in return for a small donation to the charity.

What are your plans to make the most of Capital of Culture?
We plan to unveil our flagship development at Lever Court, Duke Street, as well as attend the RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture, which this year is being held at the Liverpool Echo Arena and televised on Channel 4 (11 October 2008). We also plan to visit the architecture exhibition held in the Metropolitan Cathedral Crypt celebrating the work of renowned architect, Le Corbusier (Le Corbusier: The Art of Architecture (2 October 2008 - 18 January 2009)

We anticipate these events will give Liverpool, as other Capitals of Culture in the past, an influx of visitors and investors in the coming years. Enabling us to develop and expand our current client base within the city.

Any tips?
Don’t carry out any alterations or extensions to your home without Planning Consent or Building Regulations approval otherwise this could lead to prosecution or an enforcement notice. You could be asked to remove an unauthorised building or rectify the problem, which could prove stressful as well as troublesome and costly. You should always consult professionals and get all the approvals in writing prior to starting the work.

Do you have any stories?
When I was young and worked in the drawing office, the senior draughtsman used to make me practice my handwriting. He did this by making me copy the Building Regulations out in block capitals. I hated him at the time but now have neat handwriting!
