About Liverpool 2008

The Liverpool Culture Company was established in 2001, by Liverpool City Council, to lead the city's successful bid to be European Capital of Culture 2008. After winning the UK nomination in June 2003, the Liverpool Culture Company was charged with co-ordinating and delivering the celebrations for Liverpool's 800th birthday in 2007 and the year-long programme for 2008.

To support these aims a volunteer, ambassador and welcome programme have all been launched to engage public support and raise awareness. Central to this strategy is the Creative Communities programme - the largest grass roots arts scheme in the UK, which since 2003 has funded more than 2,500 projects. Would you like the chance to play your part in helping Liverpool stage the greatest show on earth? Leading up to 2008 is all about the capacity to deliver - not just the capacity of the Liverpool Culture Company and Liverpool City Council, but the capacity of the people of the city. Their commitment was at the heart of Liverpool's bid to win the glittering cultural crown. Now, the time has come for them to join together and uphold that commitment by helping to transform their city's future. There are a range of programmes and initiatives for you to get involved with.
